Yatra Chardham for Senior Citizens

The Yatra Chardham which is the devout wish of an any Sanatan Hindu , Shivaite or Vishnuite is done in the Gharwal region of Uttrakhand state of North India, since 1980 we are making the travel arrangements for pilgrims in this area, I have seen the Senior Citizens accompanying their families and trying to keep a pace with the youngsters to make their pilgrimage to these holy places, not knowing about the difficulties, unpredictable weather and the high altitude sickness because of thin air and less oxygen,  in travel and quite often it is the high emotional feeling of doing it by foot as a devotional duty towards the God.

Puja at Hardwar

The entire journey which is performed by the people from all over India gathers at Haridwar or Rishikesh starts the 12 -14 days journey within the Himalayas with almost every day travelling around 200-250 kms. on single road which are prone to land slidesfalling rocksheavy rains or may be simply the heavy traffic in both directions on road and once we reach the destination may be one is to wait in a queue to have a pooja or just a darshan of few minutes,  choice of food is the major problem, fresh vegetables and milk are rare, one is to compromise on whatever is available and most important the good comfortable place where one can have full rest at night and facilities of daily use.

Sri Badrinath Ji Temple at night

Quite often, Senior Citizens are unable to travel because someone from their family is not accompanying them, the entire  journey is comfortable and our experienced representative is with the Seniors, hiring of a vehicle with good ground clearance and comfortable seats, there are breaks in the journey at places where there are good facilities and good refreshments available, a prior information about the medical needs of person travelling, contacts of medical facilities available on the route which may be helpful in case of any emergencies. Food served on this route is vegetarian, the accommodations are arranged on ground floor with hot water in the bathrooms, beds are soft and warm, places are at high altitude, heaters and fire in the rooms are not allowed, providing guests with hot water bottles to keep the body warm in the bed. Accommodations are selected close to the  roads .

Palki being carried by the porters at Yamunotri

At Yamunotri, arrangements of Palki it is carried by four porters, Phata to Kedarnath is by helicopter and if desired the distance from helipad to the main shrine is arranged by a porter carrying a person in a basket chair, Gangotri and Badrinath are at comfortable walking distance, at all shrines arrangement of  priority darshan.

Good warm clotheswoolen sockswoolen cap and gloves are must, before starting for the pilgrimage. Good water-proof shoes should be worn and one must start using  them at least 15 days before starting the journey, sandals and slippers should not be used for walking ( Treking) , wind cheater or rain coat is always recommended, one must drink a lot of water because most of pilgrims fall ill due to dehydration and Cold .

The last year June 2013 floods had destroyed many flat lands which were regularly used at helipad in the Guptkashi , Sirsi, Sitapuri and Phata , the helipad at Sri Kedarnath was full of rocks and stone as the flood  water flowed  over it and then to the river Mandakini There were lots of speculations if Yatra will be allowed for Sri Kedarnath in the year 2014.

The hard labor put in by the Disaster Management team and the other Govt. Agencies worked in adverse conditions facing  rains , snow and bad weather  along with the low Oxygen at high  altitude prepared a new trekking route 14 km from Gaurikund  till Linchauli and then 6 km to Sri Kedarnath , a 21 km trek is quite difficult to climb as compared to the earlier trek. It is difficult for the Senior Citizens to do this trek The opening of main shrine doors this year the PAWAN HANS helicopter service was started from Guptkashi to Linchauli and onward 6 km trek steep in climb is to be done with same day return to Linchauli . Govt. of Uttrakhand with the help of private helicopter services offered free travel for the senior citizens .

The permission to operate the private helicopters up to  Sri Kedarnath valley was granted on 21 MAY 2014 and now the helicopter will land just 350 meters from the main shrine , it is a big relief to the pilgrims who were earlier walking 6 km to reach the Sri Kedarnath Shrine main temple and had to return same day.

Please note this route is changed and new route is being constructed which will be allowed for pilgrims from April 2015 . for more details check for Yatra Chardham year 2015 New route to Sri Kedarnath

The floods in Uttrakhand in June 2013 had a major impact on the roads and bridges , many places bridges were swept away and roads got damaged due to land slides or got washed away near the river banks , the major impact was in and around the roads to Guptkashi , Gauri Kund and trekking route Gauri Kund to Sri Kedarnath. Most of the places roads and bridges are repaired and few places work is still going on .

Till last year 2013  the Gauri Kund – Sri Kedarnath route was of 14 km and one could do it in a day with having rest and refreshments at Rambara . this route near was at places completely washed away in the floods and due to land slides the hill was not found to be safe for re construction of trek .

Year 2014 the Sri Kedarnath ( 11750 ft) is approachable through a new trekking route which starts from Gauri Kund is now of 21 km. The best part is one can reach Sonprayag  by any transport , from here onward the Govt. agencies have taken over for the all arrangements Govt. vehicles are available to take the pilgrims up to Gaurikund . All pilgrims are medically checked up to make sure that they are able to climb and walk in the high altitude area , after the registration they are allowed to start the trek  from Gauri Kund . 7 km. trek first stop is Bhim Bali where the refreshments are available, next halt is after 7 km at Linchauli ( 11000 ft)  from Bhim Bali , free tented accommodation , free food is available from the Uttrakhand Govt . Mules are available to take the pilgrims on payment basis till Linchauli

The next day the pilgrims are just 6 km short of Sri Kedarnath main temple , pilgrims are to visit the temple and return same day for a night stay at Linchauli ,it is a steep climb and quite exhausting,   for Senior Citizens free helicopter service is available , this year Uttrakhand  Govt. is taking all precautions and not allowing any one except for the priests and security personal to stay in the temple area and the Kedarnath Valley .
